Embracing the changing season, autumn energy, grounding and the quiet invitation to return to yourself

There is something rather special about September. It sits quietly between two seasons...no longer quite summer, but not yet fully autumn. The days can still hold warmth and sunshine, yet the mornings begin to feel fresher, the evenings start drawing in, and gradually nature begins to change around us. September has always felt to me like a month of transition. There is a sense of returning. Schools begin again, routines find their way back into our lives, holidays become memories, and suddenly we seem to become more aware of the year moving onwards. But September doesn't have to be about rushing back into busyness. Instead, perhaps it can be an invitation to gently return to ourselves. After the outward, expansive energy of summer, September begins to draw us inward. It asks us to notice what we have gathered over the previous months, what has nourished us, what has stretched us and perhaps what we are ready to release as we move towards the quieter seasons.
The Deeper Meaning of September
September carries a beautiful energy of transition, harvest, balance and reflection. For generations, this time of year has been associated with gathering the harvest and giving thanks for what the land has provided. Spiritually, we can look at our own lives in much the same way. Our harvest doesn't necessarily have to be something physical. It might be the confidence you have gained this year, a lesson you have learned, a boundary you have finally put in place, a relationship that has deepened, a difficult experience you have moved through or simply the realisation that you have handled far more than you once thought you could. September gives us an opportunity to stop long enough to notice these things. We can be very quick to move from one experience to another without ever acknowledging how far we have come. Perhaps this month, instead of focusing immediately on what you still need to achieve before the end of the year, take some time to recognise what you have already grown. Ask yourself what this year has taught you so far, what you are grateful for, what you may have outgrown and what you would like to carry forward with you.
September and the Autumn Equinox
One of the most meaningful moments of September is the Autumn Equinox, usually falling around the 22nd or 23rd of the month in the Northern Hemisphere. The equinox represents a point of balance, when daylight and darkness are close to equal before we gradually move towards the longer nights of autumn and winter. I love the symbolism within this because we often talk about finding balance in life as though balance means everything must always be perfectly equal. In reality, balance changes constantly. Some days we need to give more, while other days we need to receive. Sometimes we need activity, motivation and movement, while at other times our body is clearly asking us to slow down.

The equinox can become a beautiful reminder to check in with yourself and ask where your own life may have fallen slightly out of balance. Are you giving everyone else your time but forgetting yourself? Are you filling every spare moment? Are you resting but still feeling guilty about it? Are you holding onto something that is taking far more energy than you realised? September gives us permission to begin gently rebalancing, not by changing everything overnight, but through small conscious choices.
The Spiritual Energy of Letting Go
As September progresses, the natural world begins demonstrating one of its greatest lessons...letting go. Trees don't cling desperately to every leaf. They release what they no longer need in preparation for the next season, and there is something incredibly beautiful in that.

Letting go doesn't always mean walking away from people, situations or parts of our lives. Sometimes letting go can be much quieter. It can mean releasing an expectation, forgiving yourself for something you wish you had done differently, stopping the endless replaying of a conversation, saying no without producing a ten-minute explanation, allowing yourself to change your mind or simply recognising that something that once suited you perhaps no longer does. We accumulate so much emotionally and energetically without realising it...other people's worries, our own expectations, unfinished thoughts, responsibilities and that constant mental list of things we believe we should be doing. September can be a beautiful month to gently clear some of that weight. You don't necessarily need to solve everything. Sometimes simply recognising what you are carrying is the beginning of putting it down.
September's Grounding Energy
As we begin moving away from summer, grounding can become particularly supportive. Summer can feel very expansive. We are often out more, travelling, socialising, enjoying longer evenings and naturally spending more energy externally. Autumn begins to turn that energy back towards the home, the body and our inner world. Grounding practices help us reconnect with the present moment rather than constantly living inside our thoughts. Walking outside is perhaps one of the simplest ways to do this. September is a wonderful month for walking because we begin witnessing those subtle changes in nature...the first leaves turning, berries appearing in the hedgerows, cooler air and that unmistakable earthy smell that arrives as autumn approaches. Allow yourself to notice what is around you. Feel your feet connecting with the ground, notice the temperature of the air, look at the sky, listen to the birds and take in the colours beginning to change. We spend so much of our lives thinking about what happened yesterday or what needs doing tomorrow that simply being where our feet are can become a powerful practice in itself.
Crystals for September
For those who enjoy working with crystals, September offers some beautiful choices. Sapphire is traditionally recognised as September's birthstone and has long been associated with wisdom, truth, inner clarity and spiritual awareness. Its deep blue colour carries a wonderfully calm quality and can be a lovely reminder to slow the mind and listen to your own inner knowing. You don't, of course, need to have a September birthday to feel drawn towards it. Lapis Lazuli can also be a beautiful crystal to work with at this time of year, as it is often connected with wisdom, intuition and honest communication. Smoky Quartz feels especially fitting for autumn because of its association with grounding and releasing heavy or stagnant energy, while Carnelian brings in a warmer, more vibrant energy. Its orange tones echo the colours beginning to appear in nature, and it is often associated with motivation, creativity and confidence.

Clear Quartz can also be used simply as a crystal for intention. You might choose one crystal for the month and hold it for a few moments in the morning while setting a quiet intention such as, This month I choose balance, This month I release what feels heavy or This month I trust where I am. There doesn't have to be a complicated ritual around it. Sometimes intention and awareness are enough.
Essential Oils for September
Scent can have such a powerful connection with emotion, memory and the way a space feels, and autumn lends itself beautifully to essential oils. As September arrives, I often think about oils that feel both grounding and uplifting. Bergamot has a fresh yet comforting citrus aroma and can bring a lovely sense of brightness as the daylight gradually begins shortening. Frankincense has traditionally been used within spiritual and meditative practices and carries a deep, calming aroma that lends itself beautifully to quiet reflection. Cedarwood brings a woody, grounding scent that feels perfectly suited to autumn, while Lavender remains one of the loveliest oils for creating a calm evening atmosphere, especially as we begin returning to more settled routines. Sweet Orange can bring warmth and brightness when blended with deeper autumnal aromas. A simple September diffuser blend might combine Bergamot, Frankincense and Cedarwood to create something grounding without feeling too heavy. As always, essential oils should be used safely and appropriately, with care around children, pets, pregnancy and individual health circumstances.
Bringing September Into Your Home
Our surroundings affect how we feel far more than we sometimes realise. September can be a lovely time to gently change the energy of your home without feeling that you need to suddenly cover everything in pumpkins! Open the windows when the weather allows and let fresh air move through. Clear one drawer or cupboard that has been irritating you. Bring in seasonal flowers, foliage or something gathered from a walk. Light a candle in the evening. Change your blankets or cushions as the weather cools. Create one small area that simply feels peaceful. You could even create a little seasonal space with a candle, crystal, flowers or something from nature that reminds you of what September represents for you. Our homes don't need to look perfect. They simply need to feel like somewhere our nervous system is allowed to soften.
September Self-Care Doesn't Need to Be Complicated
Wellbeing can sometimes become another enormous list of things we think we should be doing. Drink this, take that supplement, meditate for twenty minutes, exercise, journal, sleep eight hours, eat perfectly...and suddenly self-care becomes another job. Perhaps September offers us a different approach. Instead of asking, What else should I be doing? try asking, What would support me today? Some days that might mean exercise. Other days it might mean rest. It could be making yourself a nourishing meal, taking a walk, turning your phone onto silent, reading a book, spending time with someone you love or simply going to bed earlier. The body often speaks quietly before it begins shouting. September can be our reminder to start listening while it is still whispering.
Supporting Your Energy Through Holistic Therapy

One of the things I love most about holistic therapies is that they offer us time to stop. When somebody walks through the doors of Angelic Holistics, there doesn't always need to be a huge reason why they have come. Sometimes we simply know we need some space. Through treatments such as Reflexology, Reiki, massage, sound therapy or a combination of therapies, we create an opportunity for the body to settle and for our attention to return inward. Life asks us to be switched on for so much of the day. Phones, messages, work, family, responsibilities and that endless mental chatter all require our attention. Having an hour where very little is required from you can sometimes feel incredibly precious. September's energy fits beautifully with that idea of pausing, resetting and gently reconnecting.
A Simple September Ritual
If you enjoy creating a little ritual for yourself, September is a wonderful month to do so. Find somewhere quiet and make yourself comfortable. You might light a candle, diffuse one of your favourite essential oils or hold a crystal that you feel drawn towards. Take a few slower breaths and think about the year so far. Then consider three simple things: something you are grateful for, something you are ready to release and something you would like to welcome into the next season. Write them down if you wish and then simply sit for a few moments. There is no need for a complicated ceremony or the perfect words. It is simply an opportunity to consciously acknowledge that another season is beginning.
Your September Intention
Instead of entering September with another enormous list of goals, perhaps choose just one intention for the month. Something that feels kind rather than demanding. It might be, I choose to create more space, I choose to trust myself, I choose to slow down, I choose to listen to my body, I choose to protect my energy, I choose to notice what is good, or I choose to release what I no longer need. Or perhaps your intention is simply, I choose to take September one day at a time. Sometimes that really is enough.
Welcoming the Season Ahead
September reminds us that change doesn't always arrive dramatically. Sometimes it happens quietly...a cooler morning, a leaf beginning to turn, an evening drawing in slightly earlier than the one before. Nature doesn't resist the transition. It simply moves with it. Perhaps there is something we can learn from that. We don't always need to know exactly what the next few months will bring. We don't need to have everything organised, resolved or figured out before moving forward. We can simply notice where we are, be grateful for what has grown, release a little of what feels heavy, come back into our bodies, spend time in nature, create space for rest and gently step into the next season.
So as September unfolds, I hope you allow yourself to enjoy the changing light, the first hints of autumn and those quieter moments that remind you to come back to yourself. May September bring you grounding when you feel scattered, clarity when things feel uncertain, balance when life feels busy and plenty of little moments that make you stop and quietly think, this feels good.
Wishing you a beautiful, balanced and gently grounded September.
With love and blessings
